Biomimicry, Biomorphism, and Biocentrism: The Science of Nature

 


Hello, I am delighted to have you here once again to share our latest conversation. Today, we will journey from science to philosophy, reaching all the way to the arts, to understand why "FORMS" are unique and essential to PHYSIS OCEAN LAB.

In science, we are familiar with the word mimesis, which means to imitate. Biology is full of mimicry—a fascinating phenomenon where every response is far more than mere instinct; it is a masterfully crafted and ingeniously applied set of reactions.


Jumping from ecology to the ideas of Aristotle, we find that biomimicry acts as a bridge: "Art, in part, completes what nature cannot bring to a finish, and in part imitates nature." Unlike biomorphism, which focuses on the aesthetics of form, biomimicry prioritizes the intelligence of function. It is an interdisciplinary field—scientific, technical, and philosophical—that positions nature, after billions of years of evolution, as humanity's most efficient and sustainable R&D laboratory. Our vision compels us to understand the chemistry of biomaterials: understanding how polymers assemble in spider silk to withstand storms is an exercise as poetic as it is technical.


Biomorphism, on the other hand, is inspired by the organic fluidity found in living beings, evoking life, growth, and softness over the rigidity of the straight line. This movement disrupts the traditional hierarchy of order and function through an aesthetic inversion. As Oscar Wilde aptly suggested, "Life imitates art far more than art imitates life." Under this premise, biomorphism does not seek a mimetic copy; rather, it uses organic forms to teach us to perceive, within nature, the laws of efficiency and beauty that we ourselves have defined.


Friedrich Nietzsche reminds us that organic forms are manifestations of underlying vital forces. In Beyond Good and Evil, he warns us: "Everything that is profound loves masks; the most profound things have even a hatred of image and allegory." If Nietzsche invites us to look behind the mask of form to find the vital force, Plato reminds us that this form is no accident, but a search for perfection.



For Plato, "Measure and proportion are everywhere beauty and virtue"—a maxim that we at PHYSIS OCEAN LAB adopt as our own. Although Plato was skeptical of the arts, he intuited that behind every manifestation lies an essential truth. By understanding that when nature achieves a form, it is not merely being functional, but expressing its purest "Idea," our work becomes that of translators: where science reveals mathematical and biochemical proportion, biomorphic art celebrates its splendor. Modern biomorphism suggests that art is not a "copy of a copy," but a tool to make the mathematical structure of nature visible.


It is our pleasure to present our collection, Bioforms of Life, which stems from a minimalist yet radical premise: form is not imposed; form emerges.


Our pieces are not intended to be objects of external contemplation, but a call to integration—a constant reminder of Aldo Leopold’s maxim: "The human being is not a visitor to nature, but a part of it" (a framework of biocentrism). Under this premise, the collection is an invitation to understand that life, when unfolding without artificial interference, always finds its purest balance. We are not designing something new; we are allowing form to come alive and manifest in its essence. Through an organically fluid design that rejects the straight line, we surrender to the logic of cycles and pure existence. Ultimately, it is the most genuine expression of a biopolymer manifesting in its most authentic and primordial state.


At PHYSIS OCEAN LAB, we treat the essence of this biopolymer like a unique jewel: a piece that does not seek a superficial imitation of nature, but rather, through rigorous biomimetic intelligence and a biomorphic aesthetic, manages to capture the truth of its own structure. We do not copy the form; we imitate life itself so that, in the end, the object and its origin become one.
